Abotz Welcome to Britannia exhibition - 2024

Born and raised in Northwest London, specifically Kilburn, this is where Abotz's passion for graffiti was born at the age of 10. Abotz spent countless days and nights leaving his mark on the area through his ABOTZ tag over the years, gaining a reputation within the local area, as he puts it. 

‘Graffiti writing was an escape from reality that became [his] reality.’ 

Art, but specifically graffiti, offered Abotz a unique lens through which to view life. Growing up in areas like Kilburn presents its challenges, especially for the youth, where it's not uncommon to be enticed by detrimental paths. Graffiti was the outlet that stopped him from getting into more trouble than he could have, but it also gave him the means to change his surroundings. This offered him a positive and empowering alternative, fostering his growth as an artist as well as an individual. 

His work is influenced by many different factors: graffiti, environment, everyday life, music, friends, and family—the list goes on. Every piece he creates is a reflection of the experiences and emotions that have shaped his life, whether they are moments of joy or challenges overcome. 

‘The next generation is so important; they look up to what we do, so it’s crucial to lead by example.’ 

‘Welcome to Britannia,’ aims to dismantle the stereotypical, picture-perfect image of Britain. While the country boasts numerous attractions, it also faces substantial challenges, especially in recent years. The show addresses this by portraying the relentless pursuit of money, not to glorify it, but to highlight the pressures it imposes on everyday life. 

Abotz’s art is a testament to the transformative power of creativity, a narrative of resilience and passion that continues to inspire those who encounter his work. His journey from the streets of Northwest London to becoming a recognised name in the art world underscores the profound impact that art can have on an individual’s life, offering not just an escape but a path to self-discovery and expression. 

Abotz’s debut sell-out at COAG back in 2022 marked a significant milestone in his career; it was met with an overwhelming response from the public and the art community alike, underscoring the impact of his work and its resonance with a wide audience.
