About the Artist

Born in South Korea (1996), raised in the Philippines, and now residing in the UK, Sophia Rosenthal’s practice is influenced by her multicultural upbringing. Highlighting themes of loss, longing, and fragmented recollections that accompany a history of migration, Sophia approaches painting as a site of experimentation. She begins with personal childhood photographs. Influenced by post-impressionism, photography, and the materiality of New Figuration painters, Sophia reimagines snapshots of childhood, family, and place, layering fragmented compositions, using resist techniques to obscure or reveal unexpected textures, and vivid colour. Through slow, materially-driven processes, she explores memory as a set of impressions that continuously unfold, unsettling any one fixed interpretation and reflecting on an increasingly shared experience of migration in an ever-evolving, globalised world.
